US Social Media Personality Fined Following Mass E-Bike Gathering on Sydney Harbour Bridge

NSW authorities have issued a fine against an American social media personality and served two traffic infringement notices for alleged negligent driving after a large group of e-bike riders gathered on the famous Sydney landmark during the busy commute on Tuesday.

The Incident: A Prohibited Ride

A gathering of around 40 individuals operating electric bikes and motorbikes travelled along the primary roadway of the bridge, where cycling is prohibited. The assembly subsequently reversed direction and traveled through the downtown area and Haymarket.

"This had a risk of people to be injured and killed," stated NSW police assistant commissioner the officer on Wednesday.

Police indicated they did not immediately pursue the group out of safety concerns but rather found the assembly at Mrs Macquarie’s Chair near the Botanic Gardens, at which point they broke up.

Penalties Issued for Content Creator

On Saturday, police stated they had served the US social media influencer known as Sur Ronster, 26, with two violation tickets for negligent driving (with no death or previous bodily harm), carrying a penalty of over five hundred dollars and penalty points each, in relation to the bridge ride-out. Officials noted that inquiries were continuing.

The personality is said to have over 3.4m subscribers on one platform and more than 1.2 million on Instagram.

Creator's Response

The online figure spoke with a major newspaper this week following the event gained traction on digital platforms, saying he regretted giving "bike life" a bad reputation.

"I’ll probably take responsibility. That was one of the safest gatherings I have witnessed," he said. "I’m coming here as a guest, and I intend to come here respecting the laws and norms of the city. So when I decided to do a public meeting it did not involve a group ride, it was just to say hi near the bridge."

"I did not know the area well, I am to blame we ended up on the bridge and I had two choices: whether the group rides the full length of the bridge and comes back, which is a crime. Or we reverse, essentially, before entering the bridge. And I made the decision at the time to go back."

Broader Context on E-Bike Regulation

The increase of electric bicycles on streets across the country has sparked increasing demands for regulation. The federal health minister, Mark Butler, commented that illegal ebikes were a "total menace on the road."

"Young people have engaged in reckless acts on bikes since the invention of the penny-farthing [but] the injuries that are coming into our hospital emergency departments are truly severe," the minister said. "We must make sure we prevent these things coming into the country [and] police are given the authority to take strong action, to take them away, to crush them, to destroy them."

NSW recorded over two hundred injuries associated with ebikes in the previous year. But, in the initial half of 2025, that figure jumped to 233 injuries plus four deaths.
