UN:Me: A Psychological Horror Merging Survival Horror and Among Us Gameplay

The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several fascinating upcoming titles, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience seems to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.

"This is a unique game where a girl containing multiple human souls within her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the psyche," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Shattered Consciousness

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of high school age. Inside her reside four distinct personas, each with unique fears and drives. These entities can take over at will, releasing their deep-seated phobias upon her suddenly.

Judging by showcased footage, much of the narrative unfolds within a eerie hospital, while other scenes show the main character navigating a desolate chapel.

A World of Individual Dread

"What are you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. People in power. Things that appear minor to other people can activate something primal within us. This game explores that concept — anxieties that are specific to each person."

The central gameplay loop involves managing whichever soul surfaces at a particular moment. However, these identities will switch involuntarily as you play. While exploring, every persona's fears become exaggerated and assault the protagonist one after another. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player encounters.

Eerie Visuals and a Deadly Choice

At first glance, UN:Me shares striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The setting is populated by nurses all sporting the identical visage, with unnervingly wide smiles. Figures in the lobby have enormous flowers growing from their necks should be. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, juxtaposing natural beauty with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular twist. Players must determine which of the four souls inhabiting the heroine is the "true" one. "All four souls claims that the physical form is rightfully them," notes a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is authentic."

Once players believes a persona is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, because each soul can deceive or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.

"Perhaps you've already destroyed the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration suggests. "The final entity standing could be a fraud. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."

UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced release date, but it is available to follow on platforms.
