The network's Top Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Major Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.

During the fall season, Adult Swim saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the network introduced a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique vibe. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. In an era often characterized by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and turned it into a breakout hit.

A Significant Investment

On December 18th, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the world of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three respectful teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."

A President's Endorsement

The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky appeal.

"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about watching this endearing family navigate their daily lives.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his hope to move the comedy genre beyond its current cynical streak. He attributed this trend to a broader media landscape.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

What Comes Next

Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to experience the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
