During the bulk of season 5 of the popular Netflix show, Holly Wheeler and Max are imprisoned inside a mental fortress forged from the recollections of Vecna. The search for a way out in the pivotal sixth episode has them witness again a defining event from Henry's youth—an event that may just hold the key to defeating him once and for all.

The Discovery in the Cavern

Upon meeting Max in the psychic realm dubbed Camazotz, Max reveals she is hiding out in a grotto that Henry avoids at all costs. By leaving the lens cap on a viewing device taken from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the source of fear lies not within the cave. When she lines up her view to the cut-out, she and Max suddenly fall into a deep mine shaft.

There, they witness a young, eight-year-old Henry come across an wounded, fearful individual. As the boy offers aid, the man panics and shoots, striking Henry in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly wonders aloud. Essentially, yes, but the act involved more than a simple act of survival.

An Interdimensional Incident and A Spy's Mission

*The First Shadow* opens with the legendary naval test, which allegedly sent a U.S. Navy ship into a realm later called the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the only one to return was the captain, who emerged in a catatonic condition with an different blood composition.

That survivor's offspring, a young Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this phenomenon in remote Nevada. But a disloyal lab worker stole research materials to hand over to the Communist spies, who were keen to start their parallel research. That traitor in the tunnel is that employee.

So, What's in the Case?

Considering what is revealed about the doctor's experiments, the briefcase would assuredly have vials of the altered blood. At that moment, Henry is bleeding from his hand. Exposure likely occurred upon handling the contents, causing the development of his psychic abilities—traits he would later pass on to the test subjects Brenner would experiment on.

Another possibility, the container could have held strange particles that later made its way to the Hawkins lab, where it maintains the stability of the Upside Down. The prequel shows that young Henry ended up in the Abyss, returning hours later as a different person. As a youth, he fights the influence of a sinister presence, similar to how Will Byers was controlled by the shadow monster in an earlier season.

A Weaponized Emotion

The reason Henry avoids the cave linked to that memory highlights how utterly horrifying the incident was for him. While he orchestrates the Hive Mind and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy still exists. Vecna uses fear, and the series is building toward a final confrontation between him and Will, who has deliberately faced his personal demons to gain strength.

This journey has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. Furthermore, Will now is aware of what Vecna himself fears, and this may grant a decisive edge in the endgame conflict to come.
