This past summer, I found myself navigating in congested traffic on the scorching streets of Marseille. At a crossing, my companion in the passenger seat suggested a right turn toward a famous spot for fish soup. However, the digital guide on my phone commanded us to go forward. Fatigued and in a stifling car, I heeded the algorithm's advice. Minutes later, we were stranded at a roadwork site. A minor incident, perhaps. But one that encapsulates a central question of our time, where digital tools permeates nearly every facet of our lives: who gets our trust to a greater degree – fellow humans and our personal instincts, or the algorithm? The Enlightenment's Promise and A Contemporary Backslide The influential German philosopher Immanuel Kant once defined the Enlightenment as "man's release from its self-inflicted immaturity." This immaturity, he wrote, "is the inability to use one's personal reason without guidance from another." For ages, that directing force for human thought was frequently the priest, the monarch, or the landowner – figures purporting to speak for God's voice. To comprehend natural events like changing seasons, people looked for explanations in religion. In organizing the social world, from commerce to love, faith served as the primary guide. “Sapere aude!” or “Have courage to use your reason!” Kant maintained that humans always possessed the ability to think rationally. They just didn't have the boldness to employ it. With revolutions in America and France, a fresh era emerged: reason would supplant superstition, and the human mind, liberated from dogma, would become the driver of advancement and a more ethical world. Today, two and a half centuries later, one might wonder if we are quietly regressing into a state of intellectual immaturity. An app suggesting a driving route is merely the start. AI risks becoming our contemporary authority – a silent guide that influences our choices and actions. We are in danger of ceding the historically earned autonomy to reason for ourselves – and now, not to deities or rulers, but to lines of code. The Swift Adoption and Hidden Risks of AI Dependence ChatGPT was launched only in 2022, and already a global survey found that an vast number of people had engaged with artificial intelligence in the preceding half-year. Whether deciding on a breakup or selecting a vote, individuals are increasingly turning to algorithms for counsel. Data suggests a large majority of user prompts concern personal life matters. Even more intriguing than our use of AI for judgment is what occurs when we allow it speak for us. Writing is now one of the top uses for generative AI, second only to everyday tasks. The celebrated American author Joan Didion famously said, “I write entirely to discover what I am thinking.” What transpires when we stop composing? Do we cease discovering? Alarmingly, emerging research suggests the outcome may be yes. A study conducted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology used brain monitoring to track the cognitive activity of essay writers who had access to AI, Google, or nothing. Those who could rely on AI displayed the lowest cognitive engagement and had difficulty quoting their own work. Maybe most concerning was that over time, participants in the AI group became progressively lazier, pasting large sections of text. “Inertia and fear,” Kant wrote, “are the reasons why so many of men … remain in perpetual nonage.” Certainly, AI's appeal stems from its convenience. It is fast, reduces effort and – critically – offers a new method to offload accountability. In his 1941 book, Escape from Freedom, the German psychoanalyst Erich Fromm argued that the rise of fascism could be understood by a preference to give up personal freedom in for the sake of the reassuring certainty of obedience. AI presents a digital method of relinquishing the burden of having to decide for oneself. The Black Box Problem: Trust Without Understanding AI's greatest allure is its capacity to accomplish things beyond human capability – sifting through oceans of data at unprecedented speed. Stuck in the car in Marseille, this was, after all, why I chose to believe the app over my friend (a decision she took as an affront). With access to real-time information, certainly the algorithm must know best – or so I believed. The core issue is that AI is a opaque system. It produces knowledge, but not always deepening human comprehension. We cannot fully grasp the process behind its conclusions – even its creators acknowledge the opacity. Nor can we verify its logic against transparent standards. So when we follow AI's recommendation, we are not being guided by reason. We are returning to the domain of faith. In dubio pro machina: when in doubt, trust the machine – that could be our 21st-century guiding principle. Using Without Losing: The Critical Balance AI can be a formidable ally for mankind in rational inquiry. It can help inventing drugs, liberate us from "bullshit jobs", or manage taxes – duties that demand little thought and are unfulfilling. This is beneficial. But Kant and his peers did not champion reason over faith just so humans could optimize chores or have extra free time. Critical thinking was not merely about productivity – it was a discipline of liberty and human emancipation. Human thought is often chaotic and fallible, but it compels us to argue, to doubt, to test ideas – and to recognize the boundaries of our own understanding. It fosters confidence, both individually and collectively. For Kant, the exercise of reason was never solely about acquiring knowledge; it was about enabling people to become authors of their own lives, and to oppose control. It was about creating a moral community based on the shared principle of reason and debate, rather than unquestioning acceptance. With all the advantages AI brings, the key question remains: how can we harness its promise of superhuman intelligence without eroding human reasoning, the bedrock of the Enlightenment and of liberal democracy itself? That may be one of the defining questions of our century. It is a question we would do well not to delegate to the algorithm.
