Democrats Criticize Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Death Penalty

Lawmakers from the Democratic party voiced fury after Donald Trump charged a group of Democratic congress members of being "traitors" and stated they should be detained and sentenced "through capital punishment" following their posting of a disputed video.

The Content That Provoked the Debate

The recorded message, shared on Tuesday, features six Democratic lawmakers who formerly acted in armed forces or intelligence positions.

"Similar to us, you all took an oath to safeguard and defend this national charter," the representatives stated in the short video. "And right now, the threats to our democratic foundation aren't just from foreign nations, but from within our own country. Our regulations are unambiguous, you can reject illegal orders, you can refuse unlawful commands, you must refuse unlawful commands. No one has to carry out commands that break the statutes or our constitution."

Donald Trump's Furious Reply

The video message reportedly prompt a furious reaction from the previous commander-in-chief.

On later in the week, Trump published on his social media platform: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In another publication, he declared: "This constitutes really bad, and Dangerous to our Country. Their statements cannot be permitted to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a additional message, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a comment that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Opposition Representatives Answer

Following Trump's comments on that day, Top Democrats published a joint announcement condemning the comments.

"Partisan aggression has no place in the United States," they stated. "Representatives who appeared in the video all worked our nation with tremendous patriotism and honor. We strongly denounce Donald Trump's offensive and dangerous calls for execution against elected officials, and appeal to Republican lawmakers to vigorously do the same."

The opposition officials also mentioned that they had been in touch with protective services "to guarantee the safety of these officials and their relatives."

"Donald Trump must right away delete these extreme social media posts and recant his dangerous language before he causes harm," the statement stated.

Officials' Defiant Reaction

The representatives who were featured in the video also published a declaration.

"We identify as ex-military personnel and defense specialists who value this United States and made an oath to safeguard and support the constitution of the United States," they said. "This commitment continues forever, and we intend to maintain it. No threat, coercion, or call for violence will prevent us from that sacred duty."

"The most revealing aspect is that the former president deems it liable to punishment by death for us to restate the legal requirements," they added. "Armed forces members should understand that we have their protection as they carry out their pledge to the national charter and responsibility to obey only lawful orders. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our responsibility."

They added: "Every American must come together and denounce the former president's calls for our execution and ideological conflict. This is a moment for moral clarity."

More Governmental Reactions

The Senate Democratic leader also censured Trump's remarks and posted on digital platforms: "Let's be crystal clear: the former president is demanding the death of government members."

He added: "This represents an outright THREAT. Every Senator, each house member, every American – without partisan consideration – should denounce this immediately and unconditionally."

The Conservative official defended Trump's allegation that the Democrats had engaged in "sedition", labeling the video as "wildly inappropriate", commenting: "This constitutes very dangerous, you have prominent officials of Congress instructing military personnel to defy commands, I think that's without precedent in American history."

The Republican leader also according to sources informed the press that in what he read of Trump's messages, Trump was "defining the violation of sedition" but that "attorneys have to examine the wording and determine all that."

Executive Branch Response

During a White House press conference on that day, when inquired by a media member, "Would the president want to put to death congressional representatives?", the White House press secretary answered: "Certainly not."

"Let's be clear about what the ex-commander in chief is reacting to," the official said. "We see current representatives of the federal government who conspired to arrange a video message to individuals of the national defense, to active duty service members encouraging them to defy the executive's legal commands."

She said: "The integrity of our armed forces rests on the hierarchy, and if that structure is violated, it can lead to fatalities, it can cause disorder, and that's what these elected officials ... are fundamentally supporting."
