Chicago's MLB Team Land Star Hitter Munetaka Murakami on an Major Multi-Million Dollar Contract.

In a major move for their rebuilding roster, the Chicago White Sox have officially added infielder Munetaka Murakami, agreeing to a two-year contract bringing in the high-profile player.

Contract Details and Incentives

The agreement features a substantial signing bonus, issued within 30 days, alongside compensation of $16 million for the next season and seventeen million for the following year.

Additionally, Murakami's compensation may grow based on award achievements in 2026:

  • A seven-figure bonus for earning the MVP award.
  • $500,000 for placing as runner-up or in third place in MVP voting.
  • $250,000 for placing between fourth and tenth.
  • $250,000 for winning the top rookie honor.

The agreement also stipulates that he cannot be assigned to the minor leagues without his permission and grants him a free agent at the end of the term. Additional perks include a dedicated interpreter and airfare between the U.S. and Japan.

Transfer Payment and Historical Context

As part of the signing, Chicago is obligated to provide a transfer fee of roughly $6.58 million to the Swallows, Murakami's former team in Japan's professional league. The Japanese club are also entitled to a 15% cut of 15% triggered performance bonuses.

Murakami will become the fourth Japanese to suit up for the South Siders, joining pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Of note, Takatsu once managed Murakami while both were in Japan.

On-Field Accomplishments

Murakami, a left-handed hitter who turns 26 on February 2nd, joins a promising core of hitters in Chicago that also features prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The team are finished with a last-place season, placing last in the AL Central but showing a notable improvement from the previous campaign.

A two-time Central League MVP honors in consecutive seasons, Murakami is renowned for a monumental 2022 season where he belted 56 homers, surpassing the longstanding record for a Japanese-born player formerly held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That year also made him the most youthful hitter ever to secure Japan's prestigious Triple Crown.

His most recent NPB campaign was curtailed to just 56 appearances due to an side strain. Even with fanning often, he hit .273 with 22 homers and 47 RBIs.
