Three police officers perished and no fewer than 15 others sustained injuries in an apparently premeditated gas explosion at a rural property in Italy's north.

Event Timeline

The detonation took place as law enforcement and fire personnel approached the house in the vicinity of the city of Verona to carry out an court-ordered eviction for a brother and sister trio aged in their 50s and 60s.

All three deceased individuals served in the Carabinieri military police.

Investigation Developments

One male and one female were arrested at the scene and one more individual who escaped subsequent to the incident was apprehended shortly later. All three have been taken to the hospital.

The explosion could be noticed some 5km (3 miles) away and images from the scene showed the structure reduced to a mass of wreckage.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” stated Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who added that efforts had been made to evict the three siblings in the previous occasions.

The leader of the region of Veneto, President Zaia, stated the property was under an court order due to debts accrued by the three owners.

Negotiators had been sent to talk with the siblings who had locked themselves into the property. When the Carabinieri reached the location soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities suspect a family member set off the detonation.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” regional commander Claudio Papagno informed news outlets.

A gas canister had been activated, and the explosion immediately struck our officers,” he said.

Incendiary devices were also found at the residence, the interior minister stated.

Casualties and Damage

Injured individuals by the explosion consisted of 11 other members of the Carabinieri as well as three officers of national police and a emergency responder.

As stated by the local prosecutor, the building was in a derelict state and had was without power.

The prosecutor was convinced the blast had taken place on a floor above the entrance and stated to journalists it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Moments before the blast, he mentioned officers had “heard a whistle, presumably the gas cylinders being turned on”.

Community Reaction

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” local residents informed Italian media, noting that the three had earlier warned to “cause an explosion” rather than leave the house.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Defence Minister Minister Crosetto stood alongside other elected representatives in commemorating the three officers who had died in the service of their country.
